The matriculation examination, set to begin
from February 25, will see introduction of grade system and use of OMR sheets.
Binita Jaiswal talks to president, Board of Secondary Education, Dakhya Prasad
Nanda about introduction of the new format. Excerpts from an interview:
The board is going to conduct the matriculation examination in a new format. Do
you feel it will be successful ?
The board has been successfully conducting the matriculation examination for
many years. This time also we have taken steps to ensure its smooth conduct.
Students and teachers are quite sceptical and worried as reforms were announced
just three months before the examination. How will you instill confidence in
them?
Sufficient steps have been taken to acquaint teachers and students with the new
format. Sample question papers have
been uploaded on our website. We also trained teachers and district education
officers. Students appeared the test examination in November in the new format
and are comfortable with OMR (optical mark recognition) sheets. We have
answered queries of students and teachers in this regard.
The grading system is similar to the CBSE pattern. Do you feel it will benefit
the students?
We have not followed the CBSE pattern blindly. The CBSE provides only grades to
students, but our marksheet will contain both marks and grades so that our
students do not face problems while going for higher studies. The aim behind
introduction of the new pattern is to lessen the burden and stress on students.
There is lot of confusion among students regarding multiple choice questions,
which they have to answer in OMR sheet?
There is no confusion. During interactions I found students and teachers quite
enthusiastic and happy with the new format. The reforms are for betterment of
students. The objective questions are easy to answer and will help teachers
evaluate the answersheets in less time. This will address the problem of
erratic evaluation. Also, objective-type questions are asked in most
competitive examinations. The new pattern will help students in the long run.
Apart from reforms in examination, what else has the board decided to do this
year?
For the first time, students will get a chance to apply for re-evaluation of
answersheets. Earlier, they could onlyapply for re-addition of marks. We
have also decided to provide laminated marksheets from this year.
